ONDE or RONDE

Eating Onde celebration ( Dong Zhi Festival) is one of many festivals celebrated by Chinese community in Indonesia.

In the month of December around the 21st or 22nd The Chinese community in Indonesia have Eating Onde Celebration

Originally celebrated in China and they called it Dong Zhi festival.

 In The celebration the food that they eat called Onde or Ronde a kind of food made of Glutinous Rice. In China they call it Tang Yuan or Yuan Xian.

The shape is round large or small, some with filling some without and serve with syrup ( sweet broth).

This celebration is unique because in our tradition we have to eat the Onde according to our age. For example if you are 25 years old so you eat 25 Onde, if you are 50 years old you have to eat 50 Onde and so on.

The tradition of eating Onde is seen as a time to gather with family and eating Onde together.

Togetherness & bonding between family members symbolized by the sticky nature of the glutinous rice flour. It is expected that the family members stick together or close to each other.

The syrup or sweet broth symbolized a sweet family. Some say after eating Onde we will increase the lifespan.
